"LITTLE EARTHQUAKES" VIDEOGRAPHY
Silent All These Years An abstract video, directed by Cindy Palmano “catching my soul on film”, as Tori said. It features her rolling in the same wooden box of the "Little Earthquakes" booklet (inspired by the video itself), playing her piano, wearing big boots, a curious outfit and singing on a white background. The video shows some male and female symbols (spoons, honey, and other strange objects:-), a beautiful old-fashioned piano and a little girl, too. The frames are a bit slower, delayed and out of focus with bright colours, making this video a little masterpiece of videography.
Crucify This video shows different frames of Tori in different situations, usually on a black or white background, featuring symbols and metaphors recalling the song’s lyrics (the “chains” dipped in water are a recurring element). We see her wet, wearing just a sheet, getting ready with a refined, old-fashioned outfid and having a cathartic (and very sensual!) bath, then dancing like a cheer-leader in a sort of school (or desperate houswife;-D) uniform with mysterious red veils showing up, and playing a black, beautiful grand piano with great charm and passion. Strange and funny video.... just try to decipher its sometimes cryptic symbols!
Winter Even simpler than the other LE videos, showing Tori in a blue\white outfit on a white blackground, dancing with flower-children, crossing walls and windows and playing a beautiful white gran piano. There are lots of winter symbols, such as ice, snow, flowers withering because of the frost, single frames of Tori singing alone on a black background and other images recalling the song’s bridge lyrics. Just as the video is gonna end, the camera frames her closer and closer, and she seems about to cry. Essential and touching.
China This video, shot in England, shows a more siren-like Tori than ever, slowly moving on a stony beach full of white shells, calling her lover and longing for his return, while an old man is building a strange pyramid of stones in front of a cave. There’s a beautiful seaside landscape, although the weather appears very cloudy and cold and the sea is a bit stormy. The main colours are white, dark and light blue. As the wind blows and the man keeps on building the strange sculpture, Tori stands up and suddenly runs to a piano partly dipped in water… which is made of stones, too! At the end, we see a half-Tori sweetly dancing behing the pyramid of stones (maybe a feet-like pyramid meant for the “siren”?) There’s another close-up of her face, and her eyes show deep sadness and are hopeless. The frames are out of focus, making this video even more intense. [Modificato da +Raffa+ 21/12/2005 17.02]
