Q1. My question: does the inclusion of "live in Japan" mean that the Japanese show will never be released in full as a separate DVD?

JSS - No it doesn't, but I imagine the next few Queen Live DVDs might be from and different era. For the picture I know we have a master tape for the VHS (edited) version and I believe a researcher is making progress finding more, but that's a question for Mr Lupton. For the sound we have a good 16 track recording of the entire show. The Japanese footage soundtrack on this DVD is the audio mix from the video master tape, but I did a new mix for the photo gallery, because that song wasn't on the VHS version of Japan '82.

Q2. Hello Justin.My question is what do you enjoy most on this new Queen CD and DVD?

JSS - I love The Hero. Also Somebody To Love particularly Freddie's antics at the end. What else.... the new lyric in Fat Bottomed Girls comes to mind... and solos in Dragon Attack and.... actually it's all brilliant!

Q2. What songs from the Austrian/Stadthalle gig will feature on disc 2? Will there be a Queen cam option? Thanks!

JSS - Another One Bites The Dust, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and GSTQ. No Queen Cam this time I'm afraid.

Q3. Will there be any "hidden tracks" on the "on fire at the bowl" DVD?

JSS - Not that I know about.

Q4. Did Gavin Taylor keep his production notes for this shoot? If so, did you use them?

JSS - I don't know if he kept them.

Q5. WHY, OH WHY, OH WHY, is there no Queen Cam option for the new DVD? To this day, I love to change camera angles with 'Live At Wembley' as I find it very interesting. thanks.

JSS - There were very limited isolated camera recordings for this concert so it simply wasn't possible.

Q6. Did you come across any problems while working on the DVD

JSS - No. I try not to get too exited about them.

Q7. How did it differ working on this than Wembley...etc etc

JSS - The main difference is, for the Wembley DVD we used the existing Stereo mix (from the 1992 CD) and "Unwrapped" it to make a surround version, whereas this time we mixed it all again.

Q8. This question may be more about the show than the DVD ,but anyways. Why does Freddie change microphone on certain songs through the show?

JSS - You should ask Peter Hince really but my understanding is that Freddie used a radio mic when he needed more freedom and he used the wired mic otherwise. The Radio mic distorts quite badly so I'm glad he didn't use it more. Obviously he needed a vocal mic at the piano too.

Q9. Here's a question: What shape was the audio for the show in when you got to it, And, How much did you have to clean/filter it before you could begin mixing it for surround? In other words, How deteriorated was it, If at all?

JSS - The tapes were physically fine. The contents were as good as we could expect but, being live a live recording and limited to 24 tracks, there were many opportunities for improvement eg. crackles on the bass, some guitar delays missing, hissing piano, buzzing keyboards, poor quality taped sections (Intro, Bo Rap & GSTQ), a snare drum mic that died for an entire song.... etc. All of this was dealt with in one way or another. Much work was also done to counteract unbalanced things like very loud electronic drums on the tom-tom tracks, quiet piano low notes and mic positioning which favoured the china cymbals and masked the ride cymbal. At one point we thought there was a bit of Freddie's dialogue missing at the end of the concert because it looks as if he says something but I can assure you, he didn't. These kinds of things are normal for any live recording.

Q10. Oh sorry,just another question,what DVD do you think that have a better sound this one or the Wembley DVD?

JSS - This one.

Q11. Are any more concerts being released on DVD? Any plans to dig up TV performances a la Led Zep(Top of the Pops, etc)? It would be fascinating to have that available.

JSS - I hope so. There are no concrete plans yet but I expect another Live DVD will be discussed soon, specially if this one is anything like as popular as the Wembley DVD.

Q12. What's your personal favorite show/live moment? Anything you wish was released but won't be (or vice versa)?

JSS - I grew up with Live Killers and that era has a lot of attraction for me. At this point in time I don't know what will or won't be released so I can't answer further.

Q13. Can you describe for me the process involved in getting something like this released....from start to end?

JSS - That's asking too much I'm afraid.

Q14. Also, How heavily involved is Brian in these releases? He gives the impression he is there for a good part of it....i would love to hear your stories regarding the times the two of you may have spent together going through these old shows and recordings. Any neat stories you could share?

JSS - You mean like the time we had 7 prostitutes lined up on the mixing desk and.... no - surely not - that's pure fiction.

Q15. I see that there will be a couple of songs from one of the nights in Vienna on the DVD. Are there any chances that that concert will be released in the future (or any other Hot Space concert)?

JSS - The Japan show might appear in some form but I think that's all there is for the Vienna concert. We certainly have no separate audio for it.

Q16. With projects like the "On Fire At The Bowl" DVD, how do you go about cleaning up the sound by removing things like tape hiss, and unwanted noises, without disturbing the final result?

JSS - Very, very carefully. I'm not joking. In fact these processes improve the final result so.... next question please.

Q17. What do you think of 5.1?I understand that things move very quickly these day's, but do you think that 2 channel stereo is the way to listen or are you a fan of surround sound?

JSS - I was wearing a "Back To Mono" badge when I arrived at the ANATO DVD-A sessions but I was quickly converted. I love it - I can't wait to hear Mustapha in surround.

Q18. Did you ever go to see Freddie and the boys live in concert? If so, was Milton Keynes one of those occasions?

JSS - I only saw Queen live in Milan 1984. It was superb, I remember Freddie singing "It's strange but it's true" whilst revealing false comedy breasts. I foolishly failed to see any other shows with Freddie.

Q19. I understand you once commented about all the mastertapes that the band had done, not just live ones, that all the tracking was up in the red on the VU meters. How does this affect your end result when you are trying to do a mix with those tracks? How hard is it to know what volume each of the tracks should be, to create a truly authentic sound mix?

JSS - Most hot recordings like that are done for a reason - to sound a particular way. This would be treated like any other source when mixing - find a balance that works and adjust the inputs and outputs accordingly.

Q20. The press release states 'extensive restoration' - approximatley how much time was spent on the sound and images to get them ready for the DvD, and if so much work went into restoration why wasn't a 'Before and After' feature included in the bonus features?

JSS - Roughly 60 days for the main concert audio. If you want a 'before and after' demo, try comparing Staying Power on GVH2 to this DVD. Ask Simon about the picture.

Q21. Straying from the subject - The lessons learned from restoring the mono track, Will this be applied to any future projects - namely 70's concert footage?

JSS - I hope so. We learned alot doing this and we're hoping to learn a whole lot more working on 70's stuff.

Q22. Justin, as a sound engineer do you have the ability to enhance the sound to make it better than it actually was...I mean do you have the ability to correct mistakes by the band in anyway?

JSS - Yes - but luckily Queen never made a single mistake.

Q23. Will we have a dvd in the future with Roger and Brian's solo videos?

JSS - There are no plans that I know about but it's possible.

Q24. I heard that the first Queen LP got an advance of £4000 from EMI for the production costs (although this wasn't the total cost). What is the cost of this latest Queen release in comparsion? i.e. for the research, restoring work, artwork, etc.

JSS - Sorry, I can't tell you that.

Q25. What are the total man-hours which have gone into producing the Milton Keynes DVD?

JSS - Kris and I work 12+ hour days when mixing. See above for number of days. Ask Simon about the visuals.

Q26. Do you think this is the best Queen DVD so far, and if so, what qualities distinguish it from the previous DVD releases? Related to this, what is your favourite moment on this DVD?

JSS - I think all the DVD's have their own highlights. For the live DVD's, Wembley was an event that took some beating but this one sees Freddie in finer voice I think, just listen to Somebody To Love and Save Me, plus the band is... On Fire!

Q27. How many overdubs are there on this release?

JSS - No overdubs.

Hello folks. As I write, test discs for the new Queen DVD - "Queen On Fire - Live at the Bowl" are being sent out for final approval. So for Rhys Thomas and I, it marks the end of our role as producers on another Queen DVD, and the moment when we realise there's nothing more we can do except wait and see what you all think of it.

It all started for us at the beginning of the year. Since the release of GVH2, there had been a lot of discussion as to what would come next. Several ideas got tossed around with the pros and cons of all the suggestions being picked over, and in the end the band went for Milton Keynes. As producers, it's up to Rhys and I to put together a proposal for how the DVD will look. Once approved by the band and Jim Beach, work began. Justin and Kris disappeared into a studio and began the mammoth task of the new stereo and 5.1 mixes, while Rhys and I got to work on the pictures.

Obviously the plan for Disc One was straightforward - as with all Queen DVD's the intention was to restore it to it's full length and try and make the experience as close as possible to the actual night. When we reviewed all the tapes, we found all we had was the live edit done on the night plus two camera feeds. So there was good news and bad. We did have the complete concert, but nowhere near the amount of rushes we had for the Wembley DVD - this meant we wouldn't be able to have the alternative angles feature which had proved so popular last time. Whether they only ever recorded two feeds, or the others have been lost is unclear - the people we spoke to who were there at the time couldn't remember! Still, when we saw the uncut concert we saw plenty to get excited about. Great moments of Freddie talking to the audience, as well as some fabulous songs such as "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Sheer Heart Attack". Also seeing "Action This Day" and "Back Chat" performed live was a wonderful revelation.

Once we'd restored the concert to it's full length, we spent time re-grading the pictures. This involves looking at each shot and sharpening the colours. Our colourist, Brian King (who, remarkably, was actually in the audience for the show!) has done a great job bringing the pictures to life, as it were, particularly as the footage was shot by Television Tube Cameras on to 1 inch video tape that is now over twenty years old. So hopefully, when you watch the concert, you'll get a real sense of how spectacular Queen looked, as well as sounded, when live.

Disc Two was slightly more complicated. When we came to do the Wembley DVD we were spoilt with the huge amount of footage available. Unfortunately that clearly wasn't the case with Milton Keynes. We had short interviews with Roger and Brian back stage which were great, but that was about it. So we looked elsewhere, both in our archive and abroad. Firstly we turned up two interviews shot by DoRo in Munich while the band were on the Hot Space tour. One with Freddie, the other with Roger and Brian. Both these went on in their entirety. Additionally we had some footage of the band performing in Japan, also from the '82 tour. This had already been released in Japan on VHS, so we picked a medley of songs as a nice bonus feature. We included the opening - just so you could see the effect of the light show in the dark - plus the performances of two songs that weren't in the Milton Keynes show - "Put Out The Fire" and "Teo Torriatte". There is also "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", which is a song where the band always seem to let their hair down and have fun. Despite all our best efforts we have, as yet, been unable to find the uncut version of this show - maybe one day it will see the light of day.

Our film researcher, Keith, contacted dozens of TV stations to see if they had any footage. The only one who came back with anything of real use, was ORF in Austria. They had made a music show about Queen's performance in Vienna. When we saw it we elected to licence the concert footage which included "Another One Bites The Dust", "We Will Rock You", "We Are The Champions" and "God Save The Queen". ORF were extremely helpful and we are talking to them about what other Queen material they have from other eras. However, on the whole buying footage from TV stations is frustrating. For one, a great deal of material has been thrown away by the stations - either for storage reasons or simply because, at the time, no one could envisage ever having a use for it again. So although it is possible that more of the Vienna show was filmed than we have here, that footage doesn't seem to exist any longer - although we'll keep looking! Secondly, buying licences like this is still very expensive, and that limits the amount we can obtain.

The final piece of the jigsaw was the picture gallery. Richard Gray dug out the best photos he could find - many of which hadn't been used before. We always try to find a great music track to accompany this, and were thrilled to find a great live recording of "Calling All Girls" from the Japan concert. It's little moments like this that we hope add value to the whole package.

As the band are very hands on at each stage, we get their approval as we go along. So once we'd agreed all the menus with the designers, it's a case of bringing it all together as one package. The moment when the restored pictures and the new sound mixes finally come together is what makes it all worthwhile. As you know, Brian and Roger have been pleasantly surprised by just how good the show actually is - we hope you are too.

So while EMI make sure it hits the shelves on time, we get a short break before the discussions begin again. There are loads of ideas for DVD releases - the problem is deciding which one is next…

ebbene si..come temevo e come era da un lato annunciato, l'audio di MK è stato ritoccato..
infatti in Fat Bottomed Girl è stata cancellata la stecca di freddie e corretta con l'audio probabilmente di altro concerto.
non che sia una cosa grave ma...forse era meglio lasciarci freddie con la sua simpatica stonatura!

il concerto di Milton Keynes è senza dubbio una delle pagine più belle della storia della band...
inizialmente non era programmato in quanto pare che il tour, almeno per quanto riguarda la parte europea, dovesse terminare a Londra, nello stadio dell'Arsenal.
in sua sostituzione venne fissato questo concerto, nella nuova arena naturale, la Milton Keynes Bowl.
il concerto, a cui assistettero non meno di 50.000 persone (chissà se sono cifre credibili), si svolse il 5 giugno del 1982, iniziando nel tardo pomeriggio, con il palco ( a dire il vero un pò misero) ancora illuminato dalle luci del giorno.

Lo show iniziò con il nastro registrato di Flash e The Hero fu il primo brano che la band suonò. Dopò Rock You Freddie salutò il pubblico.."hello everybody, okay, you know it's non very often that we do shohs in the daylight - i fucking wish we had before - i can see you all now. And there's some beauties here tonight. On with the Show...Action!"
i Queen suonarono una superba versione di Play the Game, con grandi improvvisazioni di freddie.."this is your bloody life..."

leggendo dettagliatamente quanto dice Lupton, si chiariscono alcuni dettagli riguardo alla scarsità del 2' dvd.

Lupton dice che rispetto a wembley qua c'erano disponibili solo poche registrazioni/interviste di backstage, ed è già una fortuna avere trovato queste di fred e gli altri.

Poi una cosa interessante riguardo a japan 82: mi ero sempre kiesto x' avessero incluso uno spezzone di un concerto già uscito ( anche s esolo in japan ) in vhs e laserdisc.
Lupton dice che la forma integrale di quel concerto non è stata trovata, poi hanno deciso di inserire le canzoni che non erano presenti in milton, e l'inizio giusto x farci vedere la spettacolarità del gioco di luci iniziale.

Riguardo a Vienna, han dovuto contattare molte televisioni, x kiedere se avevano del materiale disponibile, e sembra che l'unico trovato è stato vienna, preso da uno speciale realizzato da una tv a suo tempo. Poi specifica una cosa interessante: queen production ha dovuto pagare x ottenere il permesso di utilizzare quel materiale, che bastardata...

E calling all girls nella galleria fotografica è tratta dallo show giapponese.

Sinceramente io rimango sempre a bocca aperta su Somebody to love.Veramente bella....poi amo molto gli arrangiamenti fatti x Stayng power e Back Chat.Incredibili.Pensate che amo le versioni dal vivo di queste due songs.....ma odio quelle in studio!!!!!

E' veramente favoloso, concordo anche io, hanno dato delle impostazioni alle canzoni di hot space che le rendono molto belle e grintose. Questo cd è veramente spettacolare, mi lascia a bocca aperta; c'è qualcuno ogni tanto che ha il coraggio di dire che gli anni 80 segnano il declino della band; signori, sarà una voce inutile di un fan, ma ci sono band passate e future che si sognano di fare un live di questo tipo; non ci sono pseudo critici che tengano, i fatti sono racchiusi nelle note di queste canzoni.

dopo aver ascoltato attentamente il dvd non posso che confermare l'assoluta eccellenza del prodotto.

l'audio è nitido, potente, la divisione in canali rende il tutto estremamente coinvolgente.
i vari strumenti sono nitidi, le traccie vocali perfette.
inoltre in questo concerto le tre voci sono davvero molto presenti...basta ascoltare i cori di Fat Bottomed Girl...

e poi, essendo un live è quindi importante che si senta il pubblico...e posso dire di essere soddisfatto.. si sente la folla, si sente l'entusiasmo...
si, è un vero Live dei Queen!

concordo, prodotto di qualità ottima; i signori della queen production hanno lavorato benissimo; non sembra un concerto fatto 22 anni fa.

dvd 2: darei un 6.5 molto molto inferiore rispetto a wembley, ok x le giustificazioni date da Lupton ( vedete la mia traduzione al suo racconto ), ma resta cmq un pò povero...le interviste sono interessanti ok, gli extra su tokio ottimi x la qualità, ma restano un incognita ( pubblicare 4 canzoni di un live già pubblicato anni fa ), e vienna è interessante ma la qualità è scarsa e sono solo 3 pezzi... La gallery è bella x la chicca di calling all girls dal vivo, ma le foto alcune sono ripetute, e sono le stesse del booklet del dvd e del cd...insomma...poca fantasia...

sono d'accordo con te sul 1°dvd.Sul secondo darei un bel 7,5,perchè si è povero come contenuti.....ma è veramente il max che potevano fare.Tralasciamo i booklet.Ero felice come un bambino mentre sfogliavo sull'uscio del negozio quello del dvd.Appena scarto il cd trovo sta "sorpresa".Che delusione...

?? mi sfugge che l'audio del pubblico nel live magic sia stato ritoccato..

si anche io vorrei capire cosa vuol dire che il pubblico ha la voce ritoccata?

il motivo del concerto dell'inserimento di Tokyo sta nel fatto che si sono voluti pubblicare brani nn suonati a Milton Keynes.

ma sarebbe stato carino inserire anche altre due canzoni dell'album Hot Space che sono state suonate live...
Body Language (che negli USA era sempre ben accolta) e Life is real...allora si che sarebbe stato un dvd completo..tutte le canzoni dell'album dell'epoca.
forse in tal modo il secondo DVD sarebbe stato molto più interessante...

il doppio album!L'album l'ho ascoltato in negozio e devo dire
che mi ha colpito moltissimo l'audio:eccellente!!!è catturata
bene l'atmosfera.Infine,devo fare una critica alla "scenografia"
del palco in generale:non è proprio la migliore!Quei tre fari
sparsi quà e là non mi hanno mai convinto!Per fortuna
che la cornice di pubblico compensa il tutto.
