mi sono fermato a
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

ho aggiornato il tutto

poi su quella guida mi dice di installare con synaptics gdesklets ma non lo trovo tra i pacchetti

synaptic dovrebbe essere già presente, fai una prova con sudo synaptic...
Pe il gdesklet credo si trovi in un repository commentato ( da #) in /etc/apt/source.list, dagli un occhiata, magari posta qui che vediamo.

si synaptics c'è...però non c'è gdesklet

commenta (#) la voce deb cdrom, nn ti serve più ora, e togli il commento da unverse, credo si trovi lì.
una volata modificato salva, fai apt-get update e successivamente apt-cache search gdesklets, vedi se lo trova e se c'è lo installi apt-get install gdesklets

non avevo installato i pacchetti multiverse e universe!
